Being pregnant is one of the biggest fantasies a woman dream of and a wonderful experience. While she is pregnant she goes through a number of emotions. Love for a new life, excitement of a family, mood swings, pain and much more.
Yoga and exercise can help her keep mentally and physically healthy. While yoga asanas can help reduce a lot of mental stress, few strenuous yoga poses should be avoided during pregnancy to maintain a healthy and fit body.
When you are pregnant, your body goes through a number of physical changes. Not all the yoga asanas that you used to do before pregnancy will help you keep fit now. Instead, it may cause pain and can be harmful to the new life inside your womb. Twisting waist and bending is not at all recommended during pregnancy.
Here are a few yoga poses that should be avoided during your pregnancy period
1. Jumping
Yoga asanas which requires jumping should be avoided completely. During the first trimester which marks the development of an embryo, jumping and fast poses can cause discomfort and make you nauseous.
2. Compressing and twisting poses
Twisting and compressing poses can induce stress in the abdominal region which are not good for your body and your baby either. As the embryo development starts, it attaches itself to the uterine wall and the placenta is formed which nourishes the upcoming baby.
Compressing and twisting can cause strain in the abdominal region and should be avoided during pregnancy.
3. Stretching
During pregnancy, it’s normal to gain weight and a lot of masses around various regions of the body.
Too much stretching can cause stress in such areas and huge discomfort. With progress in pregnancy duration, your body prepares itself for childbirth and increases flexibility naturally. Stretching during pregnancy can cause unnecessary hurt of ligaments and pelvic joints.
4. Lying back poses
Lying back poses while doing yoga can cause you to feel nausea. It may even trigger pain in the lower back, heartburns and an increase in blood pressure. Vena cava, a nerve in the back, which is responsible for the transfer of deoxygenated blood from the lower part of the body to the back heart can be affected by lying back for too long.
5. Inversion poses
Must avoid these. As discussed earlier, during pregnancy the body gains a lot of weight to maintain you and the upcoming baby. As you gain weight, the center of gravity changes in your body. And doing inversion poses in yoga can cause an imbalance in your body, make you feel more nauseous. This yoga pose can result in more serious injuries for both mother and child.
6. Belly down poses
During the ending phase of pregnancy, it will be very difficult to lie down on the tummy. So doing yoga poses involving lying down in support of belly can cause a lot of discomfort in the mother and can lead to injury in the baby as well. During this time of pregnancy, the baby already pushes your organs and hence providing extra pressure by lying down will result to be fatal.
These are a few yoga poses that should be absolutely avoided during pregnancy. But trying other yoga poses like standing warrior, hip rotations, and modified pigeon pose can help strengthen your joints, open your pelvis, and improve your balance.
