New research says that arthritis patients can get relief from those excruciating pain by exercising only for three hours a week. According to the study, the three-hour-a-week programme has been proved so successful that they conducted a trial prescribing it to the sufferers of arthritis in Britain to reduce the severity of the pain.

The exercises are: First, stand upright from a seated position, then again seat without using arms. Second, reach the toes with outstretched arms from a seating position keeping the knees straight. Third, walk as quickly as possible around the home for 6 minutes.

After the trial, the researchers found that the average rating of the pain of the participants had reduced to 4.3 out of 10. The participants who were suffering from chronic inflammation, noticed a significant pain relief, tiredness and stiffness within just 3 months.

Dr Sara Wilcox, the leader of the study, Department of Exercise Science at the University of South Carolina, said since it is one of the most flexible formats among the evidence-based programme, it will appeal to subgroups of arthritis patients with less access to the community programme.

This research was published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine.
